A Wild Western Tale — Reckoning
High Noon Reckoning
The church bell struck twelve as Rip Campbell’s boots hit the dusty main street of Rattlesnake Gulch. Three bodies already lay sprawled in the dirt — and the real fight hadn’t even started yet.
“Campbell!” Black Jack Torrino’s voice cracked like a whip across the silent town. “You killed my brother!”
Rip spat tobacco juice and adjusted his hat brim. “Your brother drew first. Poor choice.”
The outlaw’s hand hovered over his Colt. “This ends now, lawman.”
“Agreed.”
Time crawled like molasses. Sweat beaded on Torrino’s forehead despite the autumn chill. His fingers twitched.
The draw was lightning fast — two shots echoing as one thunderclap. Smoke drifted between them.
Torrino’s eyes went wide as crimson bloomed across his vest. He toppled backward, his unfired gun clattering to the ground.
Rip holstered his smoking iron and tipped his hat to the watching townsfolk. “Justice served, folks. Nothing more to see.”
As he walked away, his spurs jingling against the silence, old-timer Pete whispered to his neighbor: “That’s four men down before lunch. Just another Tuesday for Rip Campbell.”
The church bell chimed once more, as if marking another soul’s passage to judgment.
