The history and origins of garden gnomes
Gnomes have been a part of European folklore for centuries.
They are often described as small, dwarf-like creatures that live underground and are associated with mining, metalworking, and earth elementals.
They are also believed to be keepers of hidden knowledge and are associated with wisdom and prosperity.
In Germanic mythology, gnomes are called “kobolds” and are believed to be mischievous but generally helpful spirits.
They were said to live in mines and helped miners find valuable minerals. In return, miners would leave offerings for the kobolds to ensure their continued help.
In Scandinavian folklore, Gnomes are known as “tomte” or “nisse” and are believed to be protective spirits of the home and farm.
They are also associated with the winter solstice and the Christmas tradition.
