WHY DO UNDERDOG STORIES INSPIRE US?

In 2006, the PATRIOTS of GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY earned a bid to the NCAA tournament after they won a school record 23 games in the regular season. The team shocked everyone by winning games to advance to the semi-finals in the tourney. They lost to Florida, but many pundits consider the Patriot’s performance to be one of the best runs in tournament history.

The Cinderella story as an archetype garners a huge amount of national attention and fanfare as they struggle toward their goal.

Each year, the media uses the Cinderella story tag to label an underdog team. In 2008, the Tampa Bay Rays had an impressive run to the World Series after finishing dead last or second to last in their division every year since they started.

In 2007, it was the Colorado Rockies who went from cellar dwellers to pennant winners.

The NFL is highly populated with Cinderella stories. The 1999 Rams were led by Kurt Warner to a Super Bowl win after ten consecutive losing seasons. Warner himself is an underdog hero, as many…
