Chapter One

The midday sun beat down relentlessly on the dusty streets of Fort Smith, casting long shadows and shimmering waves of heat. Marshal Eldridge Sample stood in the doorway of his weather-beaten office, squinting against the glare as he scanned the horizon for any sign of trouble.

His hand instinctively rested on the worn grip of his Colt revolver, a silent reminder of the dangers that lurked beyond the safety of the town walls.

A gust of wind kicked up a cloud of dust, swirling through the deserted streets like a ghostly apparition.

Sample frowned, a sense of unease settling in the pit of his stomach.

Something was coming, something he couldn’t quite put his finger on.

He glanced over his shoulder, his gaze lingering on the wanted posters plastered haphazardly on the walls.

Among them, one face stood out like a beacon of trouble: Billy the Kid.

Just then, the sound of approaching hoofbeats shattered the stillness, echoing off the wooden buildings in a discordant symphony of chaos. Sample’s hand tightened around the grip of his revolver as he stepped out onto the sun-baked street, his eyes narrowed with suspicion. A lone rider emerged from the swirling dust, his horse lathered with sweat and…
