Magic Monday 9 9
How it works behind the scenes:
I had an idea that started with a title.
The Witch Wore Black
It’s a planned first book in an urban fantasy series.
I came up with the rest of the titles too, seven in all.
It literally took me three minutes to write them down, while I was working on something else.
Which is the way ideas work some times, they fleet in, fleet out, and also explains why I have a thousand notebooks stacked and scattered and stuffed in backpacks, book bags and nooks and crannies.
This idea came upon me while I was writing a country song for a new country album AND making a cover for an urban fantasy short novella going up on Amazon tomorrow.
That reminds me of three other things I need to do tomorrow and I added them to the list.
Back to this magic tale of magic.
I didn’t want it to be about her abilities, in fact, I wanted her magic to be a source of discontent.
That made me think of BEWITCHED, the TV show from the late 60’s early 70’s where her husband wanted her to hide her magical ability.
And since I wanted this to be a cozy series, I had a hook.
What if a recently divorced woman moved to a new small town and tried to keep her magic secret?
That’s a pretty good conflict right there.
What if she divorced her husband because he wanted her to use her magic to get rich, illegally, and resented her because she had abilities and he didn’t.
More conflict, right?
So that hits a couple of tropes for cozy right there.
New beginnings. Small towns.
I could introduce a potential love interest with the local cop, the local handyman, or maybe both, to set up more conflict.
Now, since I’m working on a few other series right now, I asked AI to give me a rough outline, which is below.
AI is good for regurgitating very familiar and used plots.
But most books are just original versions of retold stories, and cozy mysteries are no exception.
Just ask Billy Shakespeare.
While I get this squared up and squared away, get your tingles from reading:
You have the right to remain magic.
Any spell you use can be used against you.
Fans of fast pace and smart mouths are going to enjoy the Marshal of Magic.
He’s got to be fast on the spell because his job is tough.
Taking out witches and warlocks gone bad.
But when he accidentally unleashes twelve demons from a ritual spell, he’s sentenced to clean up the mess.
Even if it kills him.
