Grayson Knox leaned against the door, his senses heightened. The old building seemed secure for now, but he knew better than to let his guard down. Emily and her new fox familiar rested on the couch, their breathing synchronized in the quiet room. Phyllis busied herself with an assortment of herbs and crystals on a wooden table.
“We need a plan,” Grayson said, breaking the silence. “Rico and his gang won’t stop. They’ll keep coming until they get what they want.”
Phyllis nodded, her hands deftly mixing ingredients. “Agreed. We need to strike first. But Emily needs to understand her power better. Her familiar will help, but it’s not enough.”
Emily sat up, rubbing her eyes. “What do you mean? What else do I need to do?”
Phyllis turned, her green eyes piercing. “You need to learn control, child. Your magic is raw, untamed. You must harness it if you’re to survive.”
Grayson crossed his arms, his gaze fixed on Emily. “Phyllis is right. We need to train you. And fast.”
