“Join us,” Kat said and scooted in so there was room on the seat next to her.

Phyllis tilted her head to one side, like she was trying to process the invite, studying it for traps and angles and alternative meanings.

She decided and dropped into the booth with an audible sigh, like anyone would make after spending most of the day on their feet.

“We’re building a Coven,” Linda said without preamble.

“Heard a little something about that,” Phyllis studied the veins on the back of her hands.

The skin was rough from too much work, blunted nails that wouldn’t get in the way. A stained smudge on the right index finger spoke of too many hours pouring over old texts, using the pointer as a place holder while she read.

“Heard you might have had some trouble too.”

Kat snorted.

“Trouble seems to find us.”

“Phyllis glanced through the window to the massive saber tooth tiger sitting in the passenger seat.

Harold stared through the front windshield, studying the swamp beyond the edge of the rutted dirt road, as if he was remembering it from a lifetime ago.
