It is an adage that transcends all the demo’s

Demographics.

Demonize.

Democracy.

The problem with not winning is trying to win another way

Usually by tearing everything down

It all boils down to communication

Which experts say is mostly about body language

Since you can’t see me it’s up to you to interpret

And there are 3 ways of doing that

There are the words I write

What I meant by writing them

And how you read them

Three shots at getting messed up

Like if I said, “You son of a bitch!”

Absent a creased brow and harsh tone, how would you read it?

What if it was meant to be joyful and packed with amazement at what you accomplished?

A cheer.

What if it was muttered, in confusion?

A sigh.

What if it was, like most people would read it, a condemnation?

Or even some other combination.

So a lot of what is written is filtered

And the filter you have to work with is your mind

Which means you can take something meant as a cheer and hear it as a condemnation

The downfall of communication

And a curse to getting a message across

Like someone who reads something and says, “That’s not funny.”

Not because it isn’t funny, but because they don’t have the sense of humor to pick it up

I mean, if you expect slapstick comedy, and have to engage with wit, those are two very different types of communication and understanding

And it’s not just what’s written, what’s read and what’s meant

There is also an age component

Because what’s funny tends to change over time

I grew up with Porkies, and American Pie and raunchy spring break comedies

Hell, I grew up with Eddie Murphy getting Raw and Andrew Dice Clay telling me to “fuhget about it.”

And none of that would be funny to a lot of people today

Because it’s open to interpretation

And understanding
