It’s my fault.

Really, it is.

I’ve been talking in It’s 9AM about the power of habits and repetition.

Talking about how good you can be at something with Practice.

How I get better with practice.

It’s just the maths of it.

And some days I want to share the results of my practice.

Which ends up being overwhelming to a lot of folks.

So…

I would say sorry that I’m willing to share so much with you.

Free Books. Works in Progress.

Audiobooks. Pictures that will feed your soul.

Videos about cooking, and coffee and my made for radio face.

Which gives you a lot of links and a lot of choices.

And even though I know folks don’t like too many choices, despite what they say, today is a choice filled day.

Starting next time, it will just be two things.

Like an In and Out menu.

Maybe.

I hope.

Because overwhelm is real, when you are given too many choices.

But today, you get a buffet of books.

A plethora of Pecan Creek.

An idea for lunch

“You drink a lot,” she said.

Jake nodded.

He did.

“I’m really good at it,” he confessed.

She tilted her head to one side at the slight lilt of slur in his speech.

“Physiologists might say you were trying to cover up a deeper problem,” she told him.

He took a sip of the whiskey in the thick glass tumbler and played with the edge on the well worn bar top.

“They would probably be right,” he agreed. “They’re smarter than me.”

That earned a smile.

He liked the way it made the fine lines around her eyes crinkle, too soft yet to be deep wrinkles.

A woman of experience.

A woman who had smiled a thousand times, and at least one of them was because of him.

It made him chuckle.

“Something funny about trauma?” she asked, but she didn’t sound mad.

“A lot more than people let on,” he said. “Everybody acts like it’s something new, something special, but trauma is about as rare as the common cold.”

“You don’t think you can get away from it?”

Jake motioned with two fingers for the bartender to rustle up another round for him and his new smiling friend.

Even if she wasn’t smiling at the moment.

Folks tended to get serious when you told them that their unique victimhood wasn’t quite as rare as they thought it was.

He was about to point it out to her, when Amanda slid a fresh glass under his hand and presented her with a tall vodka martini, two sliced of lemon floating on the edge.

Vodka made for strange bedfellows.

He knew from experience.

Some people liked to slug down vodka and throw hands.

Some others liked to toss them back and play hide and seek with body parts.

One sounded a lot more fun than the other, he thought, and so he curbed any lectures that might be lurking at the edge of his thoughts and turned a curious eye on her.

“I’m of an opinion that God gave us two ears and one mouth, so I try to listen twice as much as I talk,” he told her.

She took the martini down like a shot.

“I thought God gave men ears so women could steer,” she said.

Jake took his own whiskey down in two swallows and raised his finger to Amanda again.

“Put these on my tab.”
