Like how the guy who wrote the bill bought a million bucks of Meta stock before voting to ban tik tok
Or that the deciding vote has a “stock” portfolio that outperforms almost all hedge fund returns except Blackrock and Vanguard by a factor of 10
He’s grown his 225,000 a year tax dollar salary into a $7 million net worth in 4 years
Which makes him an expert level stock picker-
With very few peers who can perform at that same level outside of Congress
So when they say this App that has 170 million folks dancing, ice challenging, and sharing pics of slips, falls, pranks, scares, homesteading and of course cats and dogs, is taking data and manipulating us
I wonder how?
By entertainment?
If that’s the case, how is it any different from a generation of 80’s action movies prepping a bunch of Gen X hose drinkers from getting Rambo knives to prepare for Red Dawn?
Or Russia using Facebook (META) to post fake stuff against Dems and Repubs in the 2020 election? (that’s blue check verified)
It’s not.
FB and Insta sell the data you give them to China and UK and to any buyer who wants it, including Russia, so they can target market to you.
It is literally no different than me sending a targeted email to western genre readers and a different email to urban fantasy readers.
Is it manipulation to talk about feelings of nostalgia to elicit a reaction?
Coke’s been doing it for decades.
So has Miller Lite, and now every Pharma company listed on the New York Stock exchange.
It reminds me of a group of people who decided the government was trying to control them too much and dumped a bunch of tea off a ship.
But even that story might be manipulated by our own government to make us feel patriotic and rebellious!
I know that George Washington fought in the Indian Wars and led an Army through the Hudson Valley, burning villages and killing thousands of Natives, in what we call today a genocide.
He started at Glimmerglass Lake and moved west.
But our story of Dub doesn’t include that tidbit of info.
We leave it out so we venerate the “father” of our country.
