Your Short Story Money Making Machine
PICK YOUR BOOK SERIES IDEA
Ideally you know what you want to write about. Break it down by genre. Do you want to do Science Fiction? Fantasy? Urban Fantasy? Thriller? Ghost Hunters?
You have a story idea so you know what genre it belongs in.
Now sit down with the blank page and write your story. Make it between 20K and 30k words.
In other books in this series, I’ve suggested short stories between 3,000–5,000 words and you can do that as well. So long as you have an interesting concept, a beginning, middle and end, with good conflict, the story will take as long as the story takes and not a word more.
My advice is to try to write as much as you can in a short time frame. Spit it out on the page.
I’m an outline guy, usually writing down 10–12 steps.
For example, my SHADOWBOXER outlines start like this-
1. Brill gets a call from Carver- He’s got intel from an alphabet friend about potential shooters in soft targets across the country.
2. Brill goes for a run to meet Carver at the cafe. They outline the plan.
3. Brill follows up on intel and discovers the problem.
It sounds general now, but I go into as much detail as I need in the initial outline to remind me what to write about as I’m going along.
